Greetings!

It’s been awhile since a posting, so I'll be the bearer of good news. We decided to simplify a couple of things. Firstly, we decided that there is little value in grouping malware and trying to assign names to the strains of infections. At present there is just so much malicious code out there, spending time thinking of new interesting names for these threats other then "Rootkit" "Trojan" "Virus" etc was something we could do in 1998 when there were only a few threats out there. Now.. it’s just not feasible. However, I digress.

So what we have done is consolidated all our malware groups to a much simpler form. We'll be sticking to the main "groups" from now on. "Adware" "Spyware" "Trojan" "Worm" "Virus" "Rootkit" etc. I think this makes more sense in the long run, as not many people really find a use in a name like “Trojan.Download.AAC6G”, at least I don’t think they do. As an added benefit of this, we decided to allow FREE remediation for anything classified as "Adware". This will now give new and existing users a chance to see the remediation in action.

Below is a screenshot of how the free cleanup for adware will look.

  2. Has anyone had any experience with Sound_mp3.724.0.exe?

I was trying to hear the melody for a Brooks & Dunn song and was offered a file with this name. I was concerned about its .exe extension so I tried executing it on an old laptop. Almost immediately I started receiving virus warnings and pop-ups trying to sell me some spyware detectors. One warning mentioned something about a netbooster worm. Next the background for my desktop turn red and displayed a warning message about a spyware infestation. I was not sure which of these messages could be trusted so I started closing them. I was instructed that the administrator had cut off my access to Task Manager. I have Zone Alarm so I clicked "Stop all Internet activity," but the worm stayed active to some extent. My laptop's speed slowed down to almost frozen. At this point, I rebooted but was denied access to Windows. Even trying to start in Safe Mode, I receive a blue screen and the computer restarts the reboot process.

I tried googling Sound_mp3.724.0 on my other computer and and found something on a site that had prevx in its URL so I went to www.prevx.com to see if it was listed. I did not find anything on the file here.

Any information one can provide is appreciated.

    Don
